Welcome back to campus, Smollege!
As we all look back on our collectively productive and mentally stable fall semester, it’s important to reflect on the countless administrative departments at Smith that made our happiness possible; Our friendly ResLife, reliable Financial Aid department, and most importantly, the Schacht Health Center. To celebrate the hard work of our beloved health center, we asked students to share their experiences with us. Their stories can be found below.

In September, I was struck with symptoms disease for a fortnight – I was throwing up and unable to eat. Thank heavens, the Shart Center heard my prayers and came to my aid. Believe it or not, I didn’t even have to contact them. The president of medicine himself, Joe Shart, came to my dorm and diagnosed me. He explained that my puke-filled two weeks were simply due to my body adjusting to the delicious food served here at Smith College. He suggested that I simply do not throw up anymore. Can you believe it – I was cured! Thank you, Schacht Health Center!

When I was concussed, my only ally was the Schacht Health Center. Sure, my friends took care of me, my teammates checked up on me, and my teachers granted me any extensions I asked for, but none of this compared to the unconditional support that Schacht provided. When I called them to schedule my concussion-related appointment, I was graciously sent immediately to voicemail, as they were closed for five days. Presumably, this time was spent learning and listening. After a wonderful five days with no word from my favorite health center/ best friend, I called again and was kindly invited to head on over to Urgent Care, about one mile off campus. Another successful day of outsourcing all of their responsibilities to local hospitals. I love Schacht, and would love to get an appointment with them on campus someday!

In high school I was nobody. Now, thanks to Smith College’s own Schacht Health Center, I’ve earned my own nickname: the Beast of the Yeast. Last year, I thought my yeast infection was a flaw, rather than my primary asset. I foolishly attempted to get an antibiotic prescription. Luckily, Schacht knew better than to rid me of my wonderful yeast, and gave me an ineffective medication. My yeast remained with me for another 6 months. It became a guiding voice in my head by causing brain fog, and even provided me with a friendly infected lump. The best part is that the Schacht center gave me all of this for the low price of $900! What a steal! My yeast made me who I am today, and if the Schacht Center hadn’t stopped me from removing it, I don’t know where I would be. Schacht Health Center, you are my hero.
While everybody’s experience with the Schacht Health Center is unique, each student can attest to one universal truth: The Schacht Health Center is here for you (between 8:30 and 4:15, excluding weekends and holidays, and any other days they don’t feel like answering the phone).
